The critical specifications are not the wattage on the label but the peak current it survives, the duty cycle it is rated for, and its standby consumption.

Motion furniture is an unusual load: the supply sits idle for days and then works hard for a minute. That pattern inverts the usual design priorities, and it is the reason a supply chosen purely on nominal output tends to disappoint.

This guide covers what to specify and where the failure patterns come from. For the motor-load logic in a different application see electric gate power supplies.

The label does not say what the actuator sees

This is the single most useful thing to understand about this category, and it is visible in the published specifications of the products themselves.

A typical motion-furniture adapter is rated around 29V at 2A — roughly 58W. The same datasheet then states a maximum current near 4A, with overload protection set higher still. In other words, the supply is expected to deliver about twice its nominal current in normal operation, and to survive more than that before protection intervenes.

Nominal output is the continuous figure, not the momentary one. The actuator does not respect the nominal figure; it takes what the load requires until the supply limits it.

Peak capability is the real qualification. A supply that cannot sustain the peak will sag, and the control box may reset or the actuator may stall short of position.

Protection set above the peak, not at the nominal. Over-power protection that trips at the nominal figure turns normal operation into a fault.

Ask for both numbers. A supplier who quotes only the nominal is telling you they have not worked in this category.

The practical specification line is therefore a pair: nominal output, and the peak current the supply delivers for the duration a single movement takes.

Duty cycle: one minute on, eight minutes off

Actuators in furniture and beds are intermittent-duty devices, and the supply inherits that profile.

The published duty cycle is short. Actuators in this class are commonly specified at around one minute on followed by several minutes off, with a maximum continuous run of a couple of minutes.

Thermal design follows the duty cycle, not the peak. A supply rated on continuous output is over-specified for the thermal load and under-specified for the current peak — the opposite of what this application needs.

Repeated cycling is normal use. A user adjusting a recliner may make several moves in succession, which is several thermal pulses with little recovery between them.

So the useful thermal specification is a cycling profile, not a single continuous rating.

A supply designed for a steady load and used in a pulsed one will either run cooler than necessary at all times, or will be fine on the bench and warm at the end of a long evening of use.

Standby: the number that gets regulated

Here the category differs sharply from most power supply applications, because the load is absent almost all the time.

Standby dominates the energy picture. A recliner or bed sits unused for days; the supply is still plugged in and still supplying a receiver and a control board.

It is regulated. Standby consumption is subject to efficiency and standby requirements in major markets, and a product that ignores it can fail market access rather than merely lose a green credential.

Sub-half-watt is the working target. Adapters in this category are commonly specified below 0.5W at no load, which is a real engineering requirement rather than a formality.

A wireless receiver changes it. Motion furniture often contains a receiver that must stay awake for a remote control, and that load has to be inside the same standby budget.

For a brand, standby is worth specifying as a number and testing at the end of the cable, because the receiver’s consumption is part of the same figure the regulation measures.

24V or 29V, and the operating window

Two voltages dominate, and the choice is usually set by the actuator and control box rather than by the supply.

<table style="border-collapse: collapse; That tolerance is useful, because it means a modest sag under peak load does not necessarily stop the movement, but it is not an excuse for a supply that droops under its own rated load.

It also means the supply’s regulation and the actuator’s window have to be considered together. A supply whose output sits low, plus a long cable and a peak load, can leave the control box at the bottom of a range it was not designed to sit in.

What the control box does

The supply feeds a control box rather than the actuators directly, and that changes what the supply is asked to tolerate.

The control box sequences the actuators, decides which moves are permitted, and often holds the radio receiver for the handset or remote.

It presents a switched load. What the supply sees is not one motor but a step change each time an actuator starts, and the combination depends on how many actuators run together.

It may include backup behaviour. Some designs carry a small backup battery so the furniture can complete a movement, or return to a safe position, during a mains interruption.

It is the natural place to put the DC connector, which is why the connector and pinout are usually specified by the furniture designer rather than the supply vendor.

Because the control box is the load, the supply specification should always be written against the control box’s stated input, including its peak — not against a single actuator’s rating multiplied by a guess.

100% ATE functional test before shipment — every unit, not a sample.

Position memory at power failure

One feature of this category is unusual enough to be worth understanding, because it changes the supply’s job.

Furniture that cannot move is furniture the customer is stuck in. A recliner that will not return to its upright position during a power cut is a comfort problem; an adjustable bed in a raised position can be a care problem.

Some designs solve it inside the supply. Products in this category carry a small backup battery so the control electronics retain state and can complete a movement when mains power is lost.

Others solve it in the control box. The backup then lives separately, and the supply’s role is only to charge it and to behave predictably when mains is lost and restored.

Either way, the behaviour on restore matters. The system should come back to a known state rather than starting a movement as power returns, and the supply’s start-up behaviour is part of that.

If you are specifying a product where the users may not be able to move themselves, state the requirement explicitly. It is a design decision that is easy to leave implicit and expensive to add later.

Acoustics: a recliner in a living room

Motion furniture is usually bought as part of the furniture experience, and the supply contributes to it.

The room is quiet and the movement is slow. An actuator moves at a speed the user can hear, and any electrical noise from the supply during a movement is audible against that.

Standby noise is the worse case. A supply that buzzes or whistles while doing nothing is noticed in a living room in the evening, in a way that would never be noticed in a workshop.

Switching artefacts at light load are the usual cause, which is precisely the condition a recliner sits in for most of its life.

Test at no load and under load. Acoustic behaviour at light load and during a movement are different problems and are fixed in different ways.

A standalone requirement in plain language — no audible noise in a quiet room at one metre, at no load and during a movement — is cheap to specify and surprisingly effective.

Thermal: a supply inside a sofa frame

Where the supply lives determines its thermal environment, and in this category it is often the worst place in the product.

Inside a sofa or bed frame. Enclosed, unventilated and sometimes upholstered over, which removes convection almost entirely.

Near a power recliner’s motor and control box, which add their own heat during a movement.

In a home with no airflow management. The supply cannot rely on being installed with clearance; assume it will not be.

So the derating curve is the specification. Ask for the output available at the temperature inside the frame, not a figure measured on an open bench.

Because the duty is intermittent, a well-designed supply survives this environment comfortably. A supply designed for continuous operation in open air does not, and the failure appears after months rather than in a test.

Household furniture or medical furniture?

This is the fork that changes the whole compliance picture, and it is decided by the end use rather than by the hardware.

Household motion furniture is a consumer furniture product, and the supply is an information-technology-style mains product governed by the general safety standard for such equipment.

An adjustable bed sold as a medical device pulls the entire system into the medical regime, where the medical safety standard and its isolation requirements apply to the supply as part of the equipment.

The same actuator and the same control box can sit behind both, which is why suppliers who do not ask about the end use will quote the wrong construction.

Decide it in writing. Whether the product is a comfort product or a care product should be stated in the RFQ, and it should be stated once, clearly.

For a brand selling into both segments, the practical advice is to treat the medical variant as a separate programme rather than as a variant of the household one.

Standing desks: a different duty profile

Standing desks share the voltage and the actuator technology, but the usage pattern is different enough to change the specification.

Two or more actuators on one supply. Most desks drive two legs simultaneously, so the peak is the sum of two motors starting together rather than one.

The duty cycle is even shorter in practice. A desk moves a few times a day; each movement is brief and the idle periods are long.

Standby is the dominant energy number, because the desk is idle almost all the time. Sub-half-watt behaviour and a receiver that sleeps properly are the difference between a compliant product and a non-compliant one.

Anti-collision behaviour is a load event. When the desk meets an obstruction it reverses, and the detection and reversal happen in the electrical domain, so the supply’s stability during a stall matters.

The mechanical safety requirements are a separate discipline. Pinch and crush prevention is addressed in the desk’s own design, but the supply must not undermine it by behaving unpredictably.

The useful summary for desks: size for two motors starting together, design for an idle life, and specify standby as a number.

<h2 style="border-bottom: 2px solid #1264a3;
