Direct answer: what does an AI PC change about the power supply?
An AI PC does not need a different kind of power — it needs more of it, for longer. On-device inference keeps the CPU, GPU and NPU busy in sustained bursts instead of short peaks, so an AI PC power supply must hold a high continuous output without thermal throttling: typically 100W–140W for mainstream AI laptops and up to 240W for workstation-class machines under USB PD 3.1 EPR. In practice that means specifying sustained (not peak) wattage, a PD 3.1 EPR-capable design, an e-marked 5A cable, and an adapter that still clears DOE Level VI and EU ErP efficiency at that load. Paiyi Power builds and tests AI PC power supply OEM programs to exactly those four constraints.

Why AI PCs draw power differently
Sustained load, not short peaks
A conventional laptop adapter is sized for bursty work: the CPU spikes, then idles. The adapter cools down between spikes, so a supply rated just above the average draw works fine. An AI workload behaves differently. Local inference, real-time transcription, and background assistant features hold the silicon at a high fraction of its power budget for minutes rather than milliseconds. The adapter therefore sees a near-continuous load, which is a far harsher duty cycle than the same average wattage delivered in bursts.
The NPU adds a third sustained consumer
AI PCs add a neural processing unit alongside the CPU and GPU. Even when the NPU itself is efficient per operation, it is one more block drawing power at the same time as the CPU and GPU. The practical effect is a higher floor: the machine rarely drops into the low-power state that let older adapters recover thermally.
What this does to the thermal budget
Heat is the real constraint. A 140W adapter that must deliver 140W continuously needs a thermal design sized for steady-state, not for a 30-second benchmark. That is why two adapters with the same nameplate wattage can behave very differently under an AI workload: one derates after ten minutes, the other holds. When you brief an AI PC power supply OEM, ask for the continuous-output figure and the derating curve, not just the peak rating on the label.
How much wattage an AI PC actually needs
Use the table below as a starting brief. It maps device class to the adapter output, the USB Power Delivery mode required to reach it, and the cable that mode demands. The cable column is the one most often missed, and it is the most common reason a 140W or 240W program fails in the field.
| AI PC class | Adapter output | PD mode | Cable required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry AI thin-and-light | 65 W | PD 3.0 SPR 20V/3A | Standard 3A USB-C |
| Mainstream Copilot+ laptop | 100 W | PD 3.0/3.1 SPR 20V/5A | 5A e-marked |
| Performance AI laptop | 140 W | PD 3.1 EPR 28V/5A | 5A EPR e-marked |
| AI mobile workstation | 180–240 W | PD 3.1 EPR 36V/48V @5A | 5A EPR e-marked |
PD 3.1 EPR and PD 3.2 SPR AVS: what to ask for
EPR is what unlocks 140W and above
USB Power Delivery 3.0 tops out at 20V. At 5A that is 100W, which is why 100W became the ceiling for so long. USB PD 3.1 introduced the Extended Power Range with 28V, 36V and 48V levels at up to 5A, which is where 140W (28V/5A) and 240W (48V/5A) come from. Any AI PC adapter above 100W is an EPR design; there is no way to reach 140W inside the old 20V limit. See our breakdown of what the USB PD 3.2 certification timeline means for B2B buyers.
PD 3.2 SPR AVS improves efficiency below 100W
USB PD 3.2 adds SPR AVS, an Adjustable Voltage Supply in the standard range that moves in fine steps instead of jumping between fixed levels. Letting the charger track the load more closely cuts conversion loss and heat — useful on a 65W–100W AI laptop that spends most of its time just below full draw. It is an efficiency feature rather than a power increase. For a full comparison, read USB PD 3.2 SPR AVS vs PD 3.1.
Compliance wording matters
Paiyi Power products are designed to the USB PD 3.2 specification, including SPR AVS. Certification status is per-model and per-batch, and earlier production runs were tested and certified to USB PD 3.1. We send the model-specific report rather than a blanket claim, because a blanket “PD 3.2 certified” statement is not something a serious brand can put in a filing.
Cable and connector: where high-wattage programs fail
This is the most common field failure in AI PC launches and it is not the adapter’s fault. Above 3A, a USB-C cable must carry an e-marker chip that tells the source what current it can handle. Above 20V, the cable must be rated for EPR voltages. Put a 140W adapter behind a 3A cable and the system silently negotiates down to 60W; the user reports “charger too slow” and returns a perfectly good adapter.
- Up to 60W: any compliant USB-C cable (3A).
- Up to 100W: 5A e-marked cable (20V/5A).
- 140W–240W: 5A EPR e-marked cable rated for 50V.
- In the box: bundle the correct cable, and print the rating on it. Do not assume the customer already owns one.
Thermal design and derating in a small enclosure
Every adapter gets hotter as it works, and every design has a temperature at which it reduces output to protect itself. On an AI workload that point arrives quickly. Two questions separate a credible AI PC power supply OEM from a catalogue reseller:
- What is the continuous output at 40°C ambient? Not the peak, not the 25°C lab figure.
- Where does derating start? A reputable supplier will show you the curve.
GaN helps here. Because a GaN switch wastes less energy as heat, more of the thermal budget goes to sustaining output rather than to surviving it. That is why most compact 140W designs are GaN. Read more in adaptadores GaN além dos carregadores de celular.

Efficiency rules still apply at high power
Higher wattage does not exempt a supply from efficiency law; it makes compliance harder, because losses scale with throughput. An AI PC adapter sold into the US must meet DOE Nível VI, into the EU ErP under Regulation (EU) 2019/1782, and many brands additionally require CoC Tier 2 as a voluntary target. No-load consumption matters too: a 240W adapter left plugged in should not draw meaningful standby power. Full thresholds and test points are covered in normas de eficiência para fontes externas.
Safety and EMC certification for AI PC adapters
| Requisito | O que cobre | Typical market |
|---|---|---|
| IEC/EN 62368-1 | Product safety for IT and audio/video equipment | Global baseline |
| CB Scheme | Mutual acceptance of safety test reports | Multi-market |
| CE | EU conformity (safety, EMC, ErP) | Europe |
| FCC Part 15 | EMC / radio frequency emissions | Estados Unidos |
| ISO 9001 | Quality management system at the factory | Procurement requirement |
Paiyi Power holds CE, CB, FCC and ISO 9001. Model-specific reports are issued per SKU, and we recommend brands file against the actual report rather than a marketing summary.
OEM/ODM customisation options
An AI PC power supply OEM program usually touches more than the electrical spec. The options brands most often ask for:
- Output profile: fixed PD levels or a custom profile tuned to your device.
- Invólucro: size, colour, surface finish, and logo application (pad print, laser, or moulded).
- Captive or detachable cord: region-specific AC plugs, or a figure-8 / C7 / C13 inlet.
- DC-output variants: for devices that are not USB-C native, a non-standard adapter may be the better answer — see engenharia de adaptadores fora do padrão.
- Packaging and documentation: retail box, manual, and label artwork to your template.
How to brief your adapter supplier
Give a manufacturer this and you will get a usable quote on the first pass:
- Continuous output required at your worst-case ambient temperature.
- PD version and modes you need (SPR, EPR, SPR AVS).
- Cable strategy — bundled, and at what rating.
- Mercados-alvo, so the right safety and efficiency marks are quoted.
- Meta de eficiência beyond the legal minimum (CoC Tier 2 is common).
- Annual volume and order pattern, which drives tooling and unit cost.
- Branding and packaging requirements.

Frequently asked questions about AI PC power supply OEM
Does an AI PC need a special power supply?
Not a different kind — a higher sustained rating. AI workloads hold the CPU, GPU and NPU at load for longer, so specify continuous output and a derating curve rather than a peak number.
How many watts does an AI PC adapter need?
65W for entry thin-and-light, 100W for mainstream Copilot+ class, 140W for performance models, 180–240W for mobile workstations. Confirm against your own device’s sustained draw.
Why does my 140W adapter only deliver 60W?
Almost always the cable. Above 3A the cable needs an e-marker; above 20V it must be EPR-rated. A non-compliant cable forces the negotiation down to 60W.
Is 140W possible without PD 3.1 EPR?
Não. PD 3.0 caps at 20V, which is 100W at 5A. 140W requires PD 3.1 EPR at 28V/5A.
Does PD 3.2 SPR AVS increase power?
No, it improves efficiency. SPR AVS lets the charger track the load in finer voltage steps, cutting conversion loss and heat below 100W. Raw wattage still comes from EPR.
Is GaN necessary for a 140W AI PC adapter?
Not strictly, but it is usually the only way to keep it small. GaN’s lower losses mean less heat to remove, which is what makes a compact 140W brick viable.
Are Paiyi AI PC adapters PD 3.2 certified?
Projetados para PD 3.2, certificados por SKU. Units are designed to the USB PD 3.2 specification including SPR AVS; certification varies by model and batch, and earlier runs were certified to PD 3.1. We supply the model-specific report.
What MOQ applies to a custom AI PC adapter?
A partir de 200 unidades por modelo, which suits mid-size brand programs that a large OEM would decline.
Can you match an existing adapter’s electrical profile?
Usually yes. Send a sample or the spec and we will quote a pin-compatible or improved replacement, including custom voltages and connectors.
